Joining Unidive
Who can join Unidive?
Anyone that wants to! You don't need to be a UQ student or even a student at all. We even have some members that don't have a dive certification - they can't dive with the club (and they can go to all the social functions anyway) so we're still trying to figure that one out!
How old do you have to be to join Unidive?
18 years old
Where does Unidive meet?
Since the Brisbane floods we have not been able to move back into the old club shed. So from now on our meetings will be at the Unidive Boat Shed on Campus.
The boat shed is NOT the gear shed where meetings were held prior to the floods, Please see this map to get the boat shed (marked as "B") if you were walking from the gear shed.
Can I learn to dive with the club? Can I do my Open Water course through the club?
The club does a lot of teaching at various levels from Advanced Open Water through to Divemaster. However, since one of the goals of the club is to save its members money, and it's actually cheaper to do the Open Water course through a commercial operator, Unidive doesn't provide Open Water training.
Which certification agencies do you recognise?
Pretty much every international diving agency. PADI, NAUI, BSAC, SSI, CMAS, etc. If you're not from one of these, come down to the shed and have a chat.
Can I get Unidive emails if I'm not a member?
For some reason this is actually a frequently asked question. We're mystified why people would want to. The short answer is no, you need to be a member.
Can I pay my membership or gear rental by EFTPOS?
Well, at the moment we're having a bit of trouble with our phone line, and our EFTPOS machine is on the fritz. In addition, we don't have an EFTPOS machine. Or a phone. However there are ATMs on campus. The closest is probably the Commonwealth bank at the UQ Union complex.
Can I pay my membership at UQ Sport?
Yes, but we really prefer that you don't. You'll need to pay for gear rental down at the shed anyway.
Gear Hire
The gear hire page should have the answer to all of your questions. If not, please let us know!
Going on a Unidive Trip
Can you send me the dive calendar or a list of upcoming dives?
You can see a (somewhat) recent list of up coming dives here.
I can’t get on a dive? What do I do?
The best way to get on a dive is to come down to the Shed on a Thursday night. Here you will hear about trips as they go up on the board and have a chance to talk to the trip organisers. Of course, the best way to get on a trip is to organise one. It is really easy! See the Organising a Trip page under About Unidive. There are plenty of members down at the Shed who will help you out. Don’t be shy – get involved. :-)
Can my non-diving partner/friend come on Unidive trips with me if they are not a member?
Yes, extras are often welcome to come away on club trips. However, some trips have limited space for logistical reasons so the final decision is always up to the trip organiser. Obviously, if they want to dive on the trip or go on the club boat then they need to join Unidive before the trip.
